During the eighties Tony Hadley, lead singer of Spandau Ballet,
seemed to have it all. But after losing a lawsuit against his former
band member Gary Kemp in 1999, he went bankrupt. To make ends
meet he sang Spandau Ballet songs in a karaoke bar…

When, somewhere in 2004, a balladeer had been turned down
once again by yet another record company, I pictured myself old
and unsuccessful and before I knew it, ‘Karaoke Night’ was born.
And as an ode to Tony Hadley, the song had to take place in the
Berlin district of Spandau.
